Abstract

Introduction: Salivary gland neoplasms are heterogonous and important group of tumors. They comprise from 2 to 6.5 % of all head and neck tumors. Because of their heterogeneity, different classifications had been appeared. The most recent classification is WHO classification, 2004 reported by Barnes et al, 2005. Aim of work: This work aimed at studying the histopathological features of salivary gland tumors in surgical specimens; diagnose them histologically according to recent classifications and to compare our results with those reported in the literature. Results: The total number of cases was 101. Fifty four cases were diagnosed as benign tumors with a mean age of 40.4(R+(B14.2, one case was diagnosed as sialoblastoma (borderline malignant lesion) aged 1month old and 46 cases were diagnosed as malignant with a mean age of 51.30. Benign tumors showed slight male to female predilection in a ratio of 1.25 to 1. On contrast, the malignant tumors showed female predilection as the ratio of 1.2 to 1. There were overall slight male to female predominance in a ratio of 1.1 to 1. The parotid gland was the most common site for benign tumors (83.33%) while minor salivary glands were the most common sites for malignant tumors representing (52.17%). The most common benign tumor was pleomorphic adenoma (72.73%). The most common malignant tumor was adenoid cystic carcinoma (39.13%). Recommendations: Assessment of the histopathologic subtypes of the salivary gland tumors is very important for prognosis. The clinical stage is very important even more than grade. Both special and immunohistochemical stains are important in the differential diagnosis of salivary gland tumors after careful cytological examination.
