Abstract

The aim of the work: To review a literature about microbial keratitis. Some clinical cases of microbial keratitis attended Mansoura ophthalmic centre will be presented &evaluated. Material & Method : 85 eyes of 85 patients presented with microbial keratitis will be subjected to : Full ophthalmological &clinical examination .each patient underwent corneal scraping and the sample was cultured on blood agar, chocolate agar and saboraud dextrose agar. Results : The most common causative organism was Staphylococcus epidemides. The most common risk factor was foreign body trauma .The healing response was statistically related to size , site, depth, and the culture results .There was no relationship between the healing response and the risk factores. The visual outcome was statistically related to size, site, depth, and the culture results .There was no relationship between the visual outcome and the risk factor. Conclusion: Ocular trauma is the most common predisposing factor in our locality. Staph .epidermidis is the most common isolated organism in cases of keratitis .Frequent topical broad spectrum antibiotic should be given as initial therapy till the result of culture and sensitivity is obtained, however the clinical response is the mean leader for continuation or stoppage of the treatment. Flouroquinolones are considered to be potent broad spectrum antibiotics, which can be used as efficient initial monotherapy. The aim of antibiotic treatment is sterilization of the cornea, but this does not necessarily equate with healing of the epithelium or resolution of inflammation. Closure of the epithelium is, however, used as a significant end point in defining a cure inflammation.
