Abstract Onychomycosis is the most common nail disorder, onychomycosis does have an important impact on patients? quality of life, and it may pose a greater risk for diabetic rather than general population because of the possible sequalae. The aim of this work is to determine the morbidity of onychomycosis in diabetics in comparison to nondiabetics, and to determine the most common fungal species of onychomycosis in diabetic in comparison to nondiabetic patients. In this study 100 patients, 60 diabetic and 40 age and sex matched non diabetics, diagnosed clinically as having onychomycosis were selected from Dermatology out patient clinic and Diabetes out patient clinic of Mansoura University Hospital. The nails were clipped short and scrapings were collected from the nail bed as proximal as possible and from the underside of the nail plate and subjected to direct microscopic examination using potassium hydroxide and culture in duplicate on sabouraud?s dextrose agar (SDA) and dermatophyte test medium (DTM). Onychomycosis was observed to be more common in older age group and in female patients.71% of cases were from rural areas. High association between onychomycosis and tinea pedis was noticed in our study (73.0%), this association significantly increased in diabetic patients. In the diabetic group, the severity of onychomycosis was significantly increased in patients with longer duration of DM, with type (SL (BDM, in patients with uncontrolled diabetic condition , and in diabetic patients complicated with peripheral vascular impairment and peripheral neuropathy, and those with retinopathy. |
