Abstract

Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) is a common cause of retinal vascular diseases. Currently, the only proven therapy for macular edema due to BRVO is macular grid argon laser photocoagulation. However, it is ineffective in eyes with foveal capillary nonperfusion. Material & Method : Patients with BRVO and cystoids macular oedema. Patients were classified into three groups according to the nature of macular oedema and the type of treatment they received for this macular oedema, group I: perfused macular oedema, received IVTA 4 mg ,group II: ischemic macular oedema, received IVTA 4 mg and group III: perfused macular oedema , received IVTA 4 mg + grid pattern argon Results : IVTA is more effective in reducing macular thickness in cases with perfused than with ischemic macular oedema. Grid pattern argon laser photocoagulation after IVTA provides no further advantages over IVTA alone in management of macular oedema resulting from BRVO Conclusion : 1. Intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide injection seems to be a promising treatment for macular oedema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion, 2. Intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide injection reduces central macular thickness and improves visual acuity more than macular grid argon laser photocoagulation, which in triamcinolone-treated eyes provides no further advantages.
