Abstract The present study deals with the litho- and biostratigraphy, systematic paleontology and paleoecology of a well exposed Upper Cretaceous – Early Eocene succession in Farafra Oasis. Two stratigraphic sections were measured. These are the Rageh (1) and Rageh (2) sections. These sections are intensively sampled and classified from base to top into Khoman, Dakhla, Tarawan and Esna Formations. 56 planktonic and 66 benthonic species are identified and classified in the two studied sections at Rageh area. The Khoman Formation of the Maastrichtian age is composed of chalk and limestone. the lower part of the Khoman Formation may be deposited in the outer neritic to upper continental slope zone. However, the upper part of the Khoman Formation may be deposited in the inner –middle shelf zone. The Dakhla Formation changes from calcareous shale and sandstone in section(1) at Rageh area to sandy limestone in section(2) at Rageh area. The Tarawan Formation of Thanetian age is composed of limestone. The Esna Shale represented by the Maqfi Member is composed of argillaceous limestone in the two studied sections but the lower part of it is composed of sandy limestone in section (2) at Rageh.Dakhla, Tarawan and Esna may be deposited in outer neritic shelf zone. |
