Abstract There are many ways in which human stem cells can be used in basic research and in clinical research. However, there are many technical hurdles between the promise of stem cells and the realization of these uses, which will only be overcome by continued intensive stem cell research. Human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) may offer significant advantages in terms of great proliferative capacity and potential for differentiation toward fibrocartilaginous lineages These represent a promising beginning for the potential of cell-based therapy to repair a tear in the avascular inner third of the meniscus rather than proceeding to surgical resection. The role of stem cells in normal tissue turnover is incompletely understood, even less is known about stem cells in malignancy. Using the stem cells as a platform for local gene delivery may be a promising treatment approach for the future. In the long term, stem cell technology will allow us to engineeran array of musculoskeletal substitutes, with the biologic prosthesis as a dream. |
