Abstract

As there is a true need for lipid, there is always a concentration on investigating new lipid sources. Kenaf is cultivated as hedges arround cotton fields. It contains beside many useful uses of fiber, leaves and seeds in many purposes have previously mentioned in the general introduction. The seeds contain about 20% of oil (Purseglove, 1968).
In this investigation we delt with seeds, whatever it is, fresh, stored or obtained from plants previously retted, the oil content ranged from 18.27% in retted-plant seeds to 18.92% in new seeds. The most important thing that this study revealed that the amount of oil has not been affected by the way of handling the seeds as long as the seeds has not been scratched or broken (Table 2).
There was a slight difference in refractive index (Table 3) as the stored and retted-plant seeds oil showed slight increase. The former may be attributed to conjugation (Ayra et al., 1969) or occurrence of monoglycerides, or increasing the number of double bonds (zewil, 1965).
