Abstract

Increasing genetic variability of a population beside on clear
environmental (he foundation of plant breeder. There are several studies on the successful induction of useful variances for both qualitative and quantitative traits following radiation treatments in general. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the doses of gamma-radiation and inoculation with the wild type strain of rhizobia Bradyrhizobium sp. USDA 202 on variance means and the relationship
between the different doses of gamma radiation with economical traits of cowpea. The results were evaluated on the first and the second irradiated generation. These varieties were 1T8-9 (PI)’ Kream-7 (P2), IT85-D-3850-2 (p3) and IT89KD-107 (P4). These treatments were seeds irradiated with 10, 20 and 30 K rad of gamma rays beside of the control. The plants were inoculated after germination with the wild type strain of rhizobia for two
times seven days between each of them.
The results which obtained evaluated according to factorial design for Ml and M2 generations. The experiments were executed at the farm of Agric. Experimental Station, EI-baramon, Dakahlia Governorate during the summer season of 1999 and 2000. In this study, several economical traits concerning vegetative yield, its component and chemical traits were studied. The results which obtain from this study are summarized as follows:-
I. Effects of radiation 011 varietal variation in M1 and M2 irradiated generation:
A. H8-9 variety (P1)
-There were significant differences between radiation doses for all studied traits in the M1 generation except for number of nodules/ plant, weight of nodules / plant, nodulation index, root dry weight and chlorophyll contents.
-In the M2 generation, the results mentioned that were Significant differences for The trails plant height, yield expectation weight of100 seeds weight of pod / plant and content of nitrogen. The differences may be due to the effect of radiation doses more the effect of inoculation with rhizobia .
-There were significant differences were appeared between
generations for all studied traits, these differences could be due to the direct effects of radiation which appeared in the M1generation.
