Abstract

Bilharzial associated bladder carcinoma is the most common cancer nowadays among Egyptian men. It has been reported that bilharzial infection is directly involved in chromosomal breakage in the urothelium. This damage may lead to inactivation of tumor suppressor genes causing bladder cancer. ?The bladder cancer cases of the present study were associated with schistosomiasis. There are evidences supporting this correlation: 1¬?Over 50 % of the cases were squamous cell carcinoma. 2¬?Most of the bladder cancer occurs in the 5th decade of life. ?The present study has been performed on 100 cases of bladder carcinoma associated with bilharziasis and all treated with radical cystectomy to determine the genetic alteration in bilharziasis¬associated bladder carcinoma, by using both immunohistochemical and single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis methods to detect p53 protein overexpression and p53 mutation, in addition to, estimate the DNA content by flow cytometric technique.
