Abstract

Cuttings and rhizomes of the wild herb of menthe silvestris L. with 5 buds and 25 cm. long were obtained from Fayome province and cultivated in the farm of the faculty of agriculture, Al-Zhar university on two dates, 1st February an 15th October in the first season of 1970. The study was repeated on 1st February in the second season of 1971. The planting was carried out in pots No.25 filled with silt loam soil as a medium. Three cuttings or rhizomes were planted in every pot which represent one treatment. The plant development and its morphological, physical and chemical characteristics and the effect of this herb on the apricot fruit ripening studied. The results of this work could be summarized as follows :
1.Plants propagated by cuttings produced more shoots than plants propagated by rhizomes in both planting dates (February and October) in the two seasons (1970 and 1971). At the early stages of growth, plants cultivated at February produced more shoots per pot than that t October for both cultivated methods (cuttings and rhizomes) in the two seasons (1970 and 1971). Whereas at later stage plants propagated at February yielded fewer shoots than plants cultivated t October.
2.There were no differences between both propagated methods and dates of planting in shoot growth rate, i.e. total growth per unit time.
