Abstract The usefulness of computed tomography (CT) has rapidly become recognized in the diagnosis of intracranial pathology, and recently in the interpretation of soft tissue disease in other parts of the body. This is due to its ability to visualize slight differences in X-ray absorption by soft tissues, which is not possible with ordinary roentgenography. Bowel gas motion is the major source of streak artifacts produced within the abdomen. Because intestinal peristalsis is stimulated by a gastrografin water solution used as a marker for the stomach, duodenum, and small bowel we postulated that it will be necessary to prevent streak artifacts from increased bowel motion by administration of a drug capable of producing bowel atonia. Propantheline in a dose of 30-45 mg intramuscularly ten minutes before the scan stops bowel movements in most subjects. Glucagon is the myorelaxant of choice for CT scanning, although butyl - N-hyoscine bromide (Buscopan) is also used. Recently, a portable syringe pump was used to administer glucagon by intravenous infusion to achieve bowel paresis during abdominal computed tomography. |
