Abstract !Phis study was carried out on two varieties of barley (Hordeum vulgare L) Sahrawy and Giza 119 with different tolerance t o s a l i n i t y and water s t r e s s in attempt to find out responses of growth and metabolic products. Each variety was grown i n sand culture treated periodically with nutrient solution containing either different NaCl o r PEG (Polyethylene glycol)-6000 levels. Each N a C l treatment was selected to have equal osmotic potential t o another PEG treatmento Samples were taken twice during the experimental period. The f i r s t a f t e r 20 days and the second a f t e r 40 days from emergence. Results indicated that the lower level of NaCl stamulated shoot height and shoot and root fresh and dry weights of each variety while their succulence w a s decreased with all N a C l levels. Root/shoot dry weight r a t i o was increased i n Sahrawy throughout growth but in Giza 119 in the first stage of growth only. |
