Abstract

The current trend in the development of real-time Internet applications and the rapid growth of mobile systems indicate that the future internet architecture will have to support various applications with different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, regardless of whether they are running on fixed or mobile terminals. The high-speed packet networks that support various applications with different service requirements, congestion control is an important issue. One of the methods for preventing congestion is packet scheduling. Packet scheduling in network routers can provide guaranteed performance in terms of delay, delay jitter, packet loss, and throughput.
In our work, we have implemented a model to study the effect of different types of scheduling on the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) for various applications. Regarding the average delay and throughput, the simulation results showed the superiority of Weigh Fair Queuing (WFQ) algorithm over First-In-First-Out (FIFO) and Priority Queuing (PQ) algorithms.
Ongoing research on QoS, The efforts to enable end-to-end QoS over IP networks have led to the development of two different architectures, the Integrated Services architecture and more recently, the Differentiated Services, which although different, support services that overcame the best-effort service.
We have implemented a model to investigate end-to-end quality of service (QoS) provisioning approaches for UMTS networks in a DiffServ IP network environment. The effort was put on QoS classes mapping from DiffServ to UMTS, buffering and scheduling.
