Abstract

Recently, a novel virus, designated as SEN virus (SENV) was discovered . SENV is a small, circular, non-enveloped and single- stranded DNA virus that belongs to the family of TT viruses (Circoviridae). The virus is sub-grouped into 8 genotypes (A-H ), with varying prevalences in different populations . SENV-D and H are the 2 genotypes which are associated with NANE hepatitis.

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of SENV in blood donors and in patients with liver diseases in Egypt.

This study was conducted on 100 apparently healthy blood donors and 50 patients with different forms of liver diseases. All patients were diagnosed prior to blood examination by detailed history taking , complete clinical examination , routine laboratory tests , abdominal ultrasonography and liver biopsy. They were 24 patients with liver cirrhosis, 12 patients with Bilharzial hepatosplenomegaly, 8 patients with hepatitis C and 6 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
