Abstract Though extracapsular cataract extraction with the insertion of a rnonofocal posterior chamber IOL has effectively treated cataract, yet the loss of accommodation becomes maximal following this procedure. In a trial to improve the optical performance of the pseudophakic eye in the way that would mimic the optical performance of the normal human crystalline lens, several bifocal and multi focal IOLs were introduced. They provide unaided near, intermediate and distant vision tluougth producing more than one focal point and increasing the depth of focus. Line by line comparison of monofocal and multi focallOLs shows excellent results tor distant vision with multifocal IOLs. Also the near acuity is much better, compared with monofocal rOLs, and more than half of the patients with multifocal IOLs never wear glasses. However, multifocal IO!,s have their own drawbacks. These are mainly: poor vi sion in dim light and decreased contrast sensitivity. These result frum the fact that the light entering the pupil is split into two halves one coming to the near |
