Abstract

from this study, we can dedure the relation between diabetes mellitus of mothers duiing pregn-ancy and the growth and development of their chil¬ dren at 2-3 years. A purposive sample of 46 children aged 2-3 years of diabetic pregnant mothers, another similar sample of children of nondiabetic pregnant mothers were taken as control. They were met in their homes. An interviewing schedule includes the history of delivery and pregaancy of the mother of the index child, physical examination of the child to exclude congenttal anomalies and his weight and height were measured. The diabetic sample includes 47.8, 52.2 males and females, nondiabetics include 65.2, 34.8 of males and females. heavy birth weight was 76~, 23.9in infants of diabetic and nondiabetic mothers, differences were significant.:¬ The re~ularity of antenatal care affects much thE following:¬ (a) ~our se of pregnancy : Toxaemia of pregnancy occurSi in 6.6, 12.4 of diabetic and Dondaibetic mothers with re~ular visits, but it occurs in 20, 15.4of diabetic and nondiabetic mothers nonatterldant to antenatal car e . (b) ~pe of de live ry : Delivery was normal in 40.0, 75.0 of diabetic and nondiabetic mothers with regular antenatal care, Ceaserean section occurs in 50, 7.7of diabetic and nondiabetic mothers not attendant to this care visits. (c) Birth weight: Heavy birbh weight was present in 46.6 of diabetic and nondiabetic mothers with regular ante~atal visits, but this heavy weight was present in 90.0, 30.8of diabetic and nondia¬ betic mothers not attendant to antenatal visits. Factors predisposing to ohesity in children at 2-3 years: (a) :¬ 66.6of mothers suffEring from gestational diabetes have obese children but only 33.4, 45.0 of mothers with type I, type 11 diabetes have obesE children. (b) :¬ The heavy birthweight was found to increase incidence of o~esity, 84.2 of pverweight babies of diabetic mothers become obese but only 55 of overweight babies of nondiabetic mothErs become obese. Growth and devElopmEnt of children agEd 2-3 years :¬ ThE growth of children of diabetic mothErs is significantly greater than that of children of non¬ diabetic mothers. As regards the development, the Denever scoring was normal in 89.13 and 91.3 of children of diabetic and nondiabetic mothers. It was ahnormal in 4.34 and zero in children of dia-betic and nondiabetic mothers. RECOMMENDATIONS: ¬ 1- Preconception normalisation of metabolic control. 2- Early pregnancy diagnosis and metabbmie:control throughout embryo~enesis. 3- Hospitalisation for certain cases depedant on the quality of diabetic control. 4- Availability of premature centers. 5- Availabili ty of recent techniques and instruments. 6- A well experienced team of physicians, obstetricians, dietiticians, nurses as well as pediatricians must be prepared.
