Abstract

Analysis of Tunnel-soil interaction is to consider both the tunnel and the sol as structural elements, and the analysis goal is to determine the contribution of eash to reist the applied loads.
Tunnels are traditionally classified as rigid or flaex.Rigid tunnel,e.g.,reiforced concrete, cast iron, typicall have large stiffness compared to soil stiffness. On the other hand, flexible tunnel such as smooth, thin-wall, low stiffness tunnels.from the design point of view, the governing desing criteria for flexible tunnels is the thrust force, however, bending moment is governing for the rigid tunnels.
It has been nticed practically that using segments to build up the circular cross section of the tunnel reduce the induced bending moment in the tunnel walls This fact can be explained if we realise that joints between segments allow for relative rotation between segmants which concequently reduce the bending moments in the segments.
In this thesis, an assessment of wath is gained by using the segmental technique in tunneling industry, is presented. The finite element method is used in the analysis of the tunnel-soil model considering linear and nonlinear behaviour of the reinforced concrete material of the tunnel.
