Abstract

The present study is primarily aimed at determining the efficacy of acidifying vagina in cervical tissue softening and ripening,, as demonstrated by easier cervical dilatation and histologic changes in cervical tissue, in rabbits
The study was carried out on ten sexually mature white New Zealand female non-pregnant rabbits supplied by The Medical Research Center, Faculty of Medicine Ain Shams University. The rabbits were comparable in terms of age and body weight (3-3.5 Kg.).
. vaginal lotions were prepared using distilled water: 3.5% lactic acid (pH 1.8),. The experiment described has been approved by The Ethics Committee of the OB/GYN Department, Ain Shams University, within which the work was undertaken and that conforms to the national guidelines for animal usage in research.
Rabbits were allocated at random to two groups (n=5 per group) treated with 3.5% lactic acid lotion (group I) or with distilled water (group II, controls). The lotions were locally applied into vagina using an insulin syringe after application of a lubricant (Astroglide, Biofilom, Inc., Vista, CA, USA) to its nozzle to facilitate entry into vagina. One ml of each vaginal lotion was applied twice daily (twelve hourly) for 3 days.
The animals were killed 12 hours after receipt of the last dose. In all animals, the reproductive tract was immediately located, dissected, excised and cervical resistance was blindly measured with the use of cervical tonometer.
