Abstract Systemic lupus erythematosus is a complex autoimmune disease which can presents with a broad spectrum of clinical and laboratory manifestations and is characterized by flare and remissions. It is a disease with significant morbidity and mortality. The main drugs used in the treatment of SLE were corticosteroids, but they have multiple side effects as they were used for long time with high doses. Recent studies in understanding of lupus pathogenesis have suggested new, targeted approaches to therapy. The imbalance in the level of cytokines and their receptors found in SLE is crucial in the immunopathogenesis of the disease. |
