Abstract The behaviour of containing a cavity numerically. shallow foundations was investigated resting on sand experimentally and Model tests were carried out on footings 80 mm * 400 mm and having different thicknesses 2 mm, 3 mm, and 4 mm. The sand medium was deposited in a steel tank 800 mm * 1200 mm and 620 mm in height .. The cavity within the medium was constructed at several locations in the horizontal and vertical directions, and had different sizes. Loading of the footings was performed by applying equal loads at three points situated at equal spans forming equal double cantilevers. Settlements and strains were measured at six and eight poi,nts on the footinga respectively. The numerical analysis was made by using Ohde~s method in case of homogeneous soil. In case of presence of cavity Ohde~s method was modified by using the finite element technique. Data used in the analysis, i.e. dimensions of footing, load, size of cavity and modulus of elasticity of sand were those used in the experimental investigations. Results of the study indicated that, the presence of cavity on behaviour of footing was significant -and depended gre~tly on its location. Important results were obtained concerning the presence of cavity and the resulting relative rigidity on the settlements and bending moments in the footing. Satisfactory agreement was obtained betw~en the exper~mental and analytical results. |
